Vertex Strategies Launches Integrated Advisory Practice Focused on Government Relations, Public Affairs, and Market Risk
Press Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Vertex Strategies today announced the public launch of its integrated advisory practice, serving companies, trade associations, investors, and organizations navigating government decisions, regulatory processes, public affairs challenges, and market risks that increasingly shape business outcomes.
The launch comes as companies and investors face a government environment where decisions are moving faster, scrutiny is arriving earlier, and issues that once sat in separate lanes are increasingly converging. For organizations operating in regulated, capital-intensive, or politically sensitive markets, government is no longer a peripheral consideration. It is often one of the conditions that determines whether a project, investment, or business strategy can move forward.
“My career in government started the way I think it should — on the ground, in communities that don’t always make the headlines but carry the full weight of the decisions made in Raleigh and Washington,” said Colton Overcash, Founder and Managing Principal of Vertex Strategies.
“I worked across nearly a third of North Carolina during my time in Congress — from Charlotte to the Virginia state line and everything west to Murphy — meeting people in places often missed on a map and long forgotten in conversations happening hundreds of miles away. I learned what government looks like from the ground up. More importantly, I learned what it feels like to the people engaging it directly. That never left me. It’s why I’m selective about the work we take on and why being effective in this business means being principled about how you do it. That perspective — and that standard — is the foundation Vertex was built on.”
A Practice for Complex Environments
Vertex Strategies offers services across six core areas: Government Relations and Regulatory Affairs; Permitting, Entitlements and Project Approvals; Government Contracting and Procurement; Strategic Communications and Issues Management; Government Funding and Appropriations; and Investment Risk, Insurability and Government Exposure.
One of the firm’s most distinctive offerings is its work with companies and investors to evaluate public-sector exposure tied to a project, investment, or strategy before capital is committed or major decisions are made. Standard diligence typically covers financials, operations, and commercial markets — but often misses political risk, regulatory exposure, insurance market conditions, and public-sector dependencies that can determine whether an investment performs, stalls, or fails.
“I launched Vertex because I saw a gap others were missing — and too often solving in pieces,” said Overcash. “Government decisions are increasingly affecting business strategy, investment performance, communications posture, and market access at the same time. I knew there needed to be a firm designed around seeing the whole picture earlier — so I built one.”
Born Here. Built Here. Invested Here.
Vertex Strategies is not an outside firm planting a flag in North Carolina. Its founder’s roots in the state run nearly three centuries deep — to 1748, when his ancestors emigrated from Germany, crossed the Atlantic, and made their way south to Rowan County, North Carolina, where the Overcash name has remained ever since. Overcash grew up in that same tradition — rooted in a state that shaped his values, launched his career, and ultimately called him home.
That history informs Vertex’s perspective and approach — grounded in North Carolina, connected to Washington, and able to navigate decisions across the federal, state, and local levels.
Charlotte was chosen as the firm’s home because it sits at the center of many forces shaping North Carolina’s future — from unprecedented energy demand and advanced manufacturing investment, to the technology, aerospace, and defense activity stretching across the Piedmont, Research Triangle, and one of the largest military footprints in the country. From that vantage point, North Carolina offers a clear view of the issues facing fast-growing states and regional economies — and how local decisions increasingly connect to Raleigh and Washington, D.C.
Experience Where Decisions Are Made
Overcash brings fifteen years of experience navigating some of the most complex public affairs challenges in the country — beginning with political campaigns and service in the offices of U.S. Senator Thom Tillis and U.S. Representative Virginia Foxx, and later serving in a presidential appointment at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in the Trump Administration.
At DHS, he served as a senior communications and strategic affairs leader during the COVID-19 pandemic — overseeing enterprise communications across one of the largest and most scrutinized federal responses in modern American history, in close coordination with the White House. That work helped inform how state, local, tribal, and foreign governments understood and responded to the crisis in real time. He also advised the Secretary of Homeland Security and other senior leaders on border security and emerging technology, and helped shape DHS’s artificial intelligence strategy at a moment when AI-related decisions were beginning to define the future of national security.
Following his government service, Overcash joined a global technology company to advise on government affairs strategy across a multistate region spanning the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Upper South — advocating for the policies and funding decisions that put better technology in the hands of first responders and law enforcement officers who protect American communities every day.
“North Carolina is one of the most important and dynamic government affairs arenas in the country right now — and many organizations operating at the federal, state, and local levels are engaging too late, too narrowly, or without a full picture of how the political, regulatory, and market forces around them are moving,” said Overcash. “The window to shape outcomes is almost always earlier than people think. By the time most organizations show up, the decision is often already made.”
As Vertex Strategies launches its full practice, it is also actively expanding, with senior advisors expected to join in the coming months to support growing demand across its services and focus areas.
It is also developing the Vertex Civic Impact Program, a pro bono and reduced-fee initiative designed to support select nonprofits, civic groups, small businesses, and mission-driven organizations operating in the public interest. Vertex believes access to strategic government guidance should not be limited to the largest players or those with the largest budgets — but should also be available to people and smaller organizations doing important work that often goes unnoticed.
